How mobile phones are making your bicycle 'smart'

How mobile phones are making your bicycle 'smart'
Thanks to improved LED lights, microchips and smartphone technology, bicycles can have loud horns, brake lights, turn signals and all manner of lighting.

It has happened to many a bicyclist: the car beside you suddenly cuts into your path or passes close enough for you to feel the heat of its exhaust on your leg.
A big part of avoiding those close calls is being noticed, but for years bicyclists' only defences were bright clothing, battery-powered incandescent bulbs and the cheery ching-ching of a traditional bicycle bell.
Now that's changing. Thanks to improved LED lights, microchips and smartphone technology, bicycles can have loud horns, brake lights, turn signals and all manner of lighting.
You can spend a few hundred dollars on a bike headlight alone these days. At just under $300, the Taz 1200 from Light and Motion in
Monterey, Calif., is said to put out one-third more light than the average car headlight and is good for riding on roads and on dark trails.
But for the average street biker there are more affordable options.
Virtually all of today's LED headlights and taillights for bikes have static and multiple flashing modes activated with the push of a button. Add to that a blue flashing light from BikeBrightz Ltd. in Toledo, Ohio and the guy pedaling home after work in the dark could be mistaken for a squad car. Strap the light bar anywhere on your frame, and at $15 each, you can vary your colour scheme. It also comes in "mean green," "rocket red," "powerful pink" and "mellow yellow."
And then there are the lasers.
In England, Emily Brooke is bringing her Blaze Bike Light to customers in September. The Blaze projects a green image of a bike rider in front of the cyclist, making it possible for nighttime drivers to see the glowing image even if the rider is in a blind spot.

A price has not yet been set.
The single-speed and customizable fixed-gear bikes, which cost $325 and up, do have drawbacks, though. They don't shine as brightly in low light as they do in total darkness. Their glow fades in time.

The AMU order dictated that female students would have to wear decent 'salwar kameez' with dupatta during university functions.
ALIGARH: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration on Saturday withdrew its order that asked female students to wear "proper and decent-looking dresses".

The AMU order dictated that female students would have to wear decent 'salwar kameez' with dupatta during university functions.

The university has said that students not adhering to these new rules will attract punitive action, including a fine of up to Rs.500.

The notice also included pointers on how to keep the rooms clean, save energy, not use electric appliances like heaters inside their rooms and not to "involve in any illegal activity" that is "unbecoming" of university students.

A leaked picture suggests that Nokia is working on its biggest smartphone ever featuring a 6-inch screen.
NEW DELHI: Nokia is on a product launching spree, rolling out as many as seven handsets in a span of just four months. Now, a leaked picture suggests that the Finnish company is working on its biggest smartphone ever, which will compete against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note III, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Huawei Ascend Mate.

The leaked photo comes courtesy a Chinese microblogging website, which has leaked also several devices in the past. The image shows just the front panel with the Nokia logo on top and the standard three-key layout of Windows Phone smartphones at the bottom. The display has space for a front-facing camera and very thin bezels on the side. The report by Weibo user ICTech claims that the screen size is 6-inch and the device is already under mass production in China.

Microsoft is due to release its GDR3 update for Windows Phone mobile operating system. This update will bring several new features to the platform, including support for quad-core processors and 1080p resolution displays. It will also introduce another row of home screen Live Tiles, which will help phablets make full use of the big screen.

Earlier, a blurry image of this device did rounds in tech circles, with rumours saying it will be named Lumia 1030. A report by UK's Mobile Today says Nokia will unveil its 6-inch phablet in the fourth quarter of this year, priced between $620 and $780.

Google to launch Moto X phone on August 1

Google to launch Moto X phone on August 1
Google's Motorola division appears set to unveil its much anticipated Moto X phone on August 1 at an event in New York City.

SAN FRANCISCO: Google's Motorola division appears set to unveil its much anticipated Moto X phone on August 1 at an event in New York City.

Email invitations sent to the media displayed the Moto X name in bold letters. The invitation depicted several youths holding the Moto X, the first smartphone Motorola has developed since its 2012 acquisition by Google.

Motorola, which Google bought for $12.5 billion, has steadily ceded market share to Apple and Samsung Electronics, with most of its latest phones garnering relatively lukewarm receptions.

The Motorola business has been a drag on Google's profit margins, with Motorola's second-quarter losses totaling $342 million.

A Web page to respond to the invitation said, "Come experience the new Motorola. No Stage. No crowds." The page asks guests to select one of several "sessions" to attend at different times at an address in mid-town Manhattan.

In May, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said at the AllThingsD technology conference that the new Moto X phones would be built in the United States

App to tell where you will exactly be in future

App to tell where you will exactly be in future
Researchers have developed a new tracking software that can tell you exactly where you will be on a precise time and date years into the future.
NEW YORK: Do you know precisely where you'll be 285 days from now at 2 pm? Researchers have developed a new tracking software that can tell you exactly where you will be on a precise time and date years into the future.

Adam Sadilek, formerly of Microsoft , and John Krumm, a principal researcher at Microsoft used information from a pool of 300 volunteers in the Seattle metro area, Sadilek and Krumm and gathered a mountain of location data.

As the volunteers went about their daily lives — going to work, to the grocery store, out for a jog, even for transcontinental travel — each carried a GPS device much the same way they carried a cell phone, Fast Company Magazine reported. The researchers also installed GPS devices in commercial shuttles and transit vans that the volunteers used regularly, and the volunteers' own vehicles, to further ensure accuracy.

After collecting over 150 million location points, the researchers then had Far Out, the first system of its kind to predict long term human mobility in a unified way, parse the data. Far Out does not need to be told exactly what to look for — it automatically discovered regularities in the data.

"For example, it might notice that Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually about the same and fairly consistent from week to week. Then when we ask about a future Tuesday or Thursday, the algorithm automatically produces a typical Tuesday/Thursday as a prediction," they said.

Doctors check Sanjay Dutt for hypertension

Doctors check Sanjay Dutt for hypertension
Sanjay Dutt is undergoing his 42-month prison sentence in an Arms Act case. This is his second stint at the Yerawada jail.
PUNE: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was examined for hypertension at the Yerawada central jail by a team of medical experts from the Sassoon general hospital on Saturday.

Dutt's friend Yusuf Nalwala, who is lodged in the same jail, was examined for various ailments.

"The medical examination of Dutt was a general check-up. He is suffering from various ailments. All check-ups are done regularly at the jail hospital, but one check-up was left out, which was conducted on Saturday as per the TADA court order," said jail superintendent Yogesh Desai.

"Dutt has hypertension and our doctors went to the jail to check his blood pressure. It was a routine follow-up. Otherwise he is perfectly ok," said D G Kulkarni, medical superintendent of the hospital.

Kulkarni said, "There was a request from the jail authorities to conduct Dutt's medical examination in the jail, since he cannot be brought to the hospital like other convicts and under trials, being a high risk prisoner."

Dutt is undergoing his 42-month prison sentence in an Arms Act case. This is his second stint at the Yerawada jail. He was shifted to Yerawada jail from Arthur Road in Mumbai jail on May 22

Smart knife detects cancer in 3 seconds

Smart knife detects cancer in 3 seconds

LONDON: Surgeons removing cancerous tissue face a dilemma — how to cut out as little healthy tissue as possible while making sure all of the cancer is removed and knowing which is which. The world's first intelligent knife, which uses an electrical current to vapourize the tissue while cutting through, may now tell them that in less than three seconds.

In a major breakthrough, British scientists have tested the 'iKnife', which diagnosed tissue samples from 91 patients with 100% accuracy, instantly providing information that normally takes up to half an hour to reveal using laboratory tests. The findings by researchers atImperial College London have published the breakthrough in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

"The iKnife provides a result almost instantly, allowing surgeons to carry out procedures with a level of accuracy that hasn't been possible before. We believe it has the potential to reduce tumour recurrence rates and enable more patients to survive," said its inventor, Dr Zoltan Takats of Imperial College London.

The researchers first used the iKnife to analyse tissue samples collected from 302 surgery patients, recording the characteristics of thousands of cancerous and non-cancerous tissues, including brain, lung, breast, stomach, colon and liver tumours to create a reference library. The iKnife works by matching its readings during surgery to the reference library to determine what type of tissue is being cut, giving a result in less than three seconds.

How Farhan Akhtar became Milkha Singh

How Farhan Akhtar became Milkha Singh
Farhan in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Farhan Akhtar has come a long way from 2004, when he had just directed 'Lakshya', and would walk out of Mumbai's Otters Club in exactly 15 minutes after a haphazard weight training session.

"I was never fond of it," he smiles. It was after he met trainer Samir Jaura that he realised he has an active metabolism, and his body is ectomorphic or lean. "If I don't work out, I lose weight instead of gaining it," he says.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag director Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra told Jaura to sculpt Akhtar's body like Brad Pitt's inFight Club. "The idea was to get an athletic body, not the bulkyGhajini-type," says Jaura. Akhtar started training in November 2011, beginning with a one-hour-a-day regimen, four days a week. It gradually went up to six hours a day, six days per week. Here, Farhan describes how he became Milkha Singh.

The workout plan: I sport two looks in the film - the bulky soldier and the lean runner. I stand 5'9" tall and weigh 66 kilos. To bulk up, I had to gain an additional eight kilos. And later, I lost 10 kilos to weigh 64kg for the second look.

What it took: I had to first correct my sleeping pattern. No late-night parties. I was in bed by 10pm and up by 5.30am. I trained for two hours, three times a day.

Athletic training: At 6.30am, I'd start my athletic training with coach Melwyn Crasto at Priyadarshini Park in Mumbai. It involved one-and-a-half hours of sprints and flexibility exercises. Because running has a neuromuscular component, I was taught drills that break the monotony of running and help coordinate body movements. Referred to as the ABC of running, these drills isolated the phases of the gait cycle - knee lift, upper leg motion, and pushoff - and helped me become a near professional runner.

The 'A's involve exercises that work on the knee drive, 'B's on leg extension and 'C's helped with pull through. When Milkha ran, his right hand would bend inwards. And Crasto helped me get that right. By the end of each session, I would complete 12 sprints of 100 metres.

Functional training: After resting for six hours, it was time for functional training (working against gravity with your body weight; climbing up a rope or hanging from a height) and abdominal exercises for 1.5 hours. This ensured flexibility. I'd pack in 12 sets of ab crunches. One set included 200 repetitions, which means I did about 2,500 repetitions in all.

Weight training: At 6pm, I'd spend two hours doing a combination of Hypertrophy Strength Training (HST) and Tabata. This was for the first six months. HST induces the fastest muscle growth over an extended period without the use of steroids.

It involves increasing the load on muscles consistently with every session. This ups activity within a muscle cell, making it sensitive to incoming nutrients for repair. Every day, I'd work on my legs, back, then chest, shoulders, biceps and triceps. This was a 12-week programme. As the weights kept getting heavier, the reps decreased. After three months, I moved to Tabata, a high intensity workout in which I had to pull off maximum repetitions in a given period. We combined two muscle groups every day - chest-biceps, back-triceps, and shoulders-legs. I did eight-10 sets (each lasting 90 seconds) per body part.

In the last six months, when I was supposed to slim down, I moved to endurance training with weights. We combined two muscle groups in a day and did 15 sets of 100 reps per body part. The weights remained consistent throughout all sets. I finished training in December 2012. I was left with just 5% body fat.

What I ate: I gave up rice, chapati and bread. Instead, I got my carbs from fruits and vegetables. To bulk up for Look 1 (soldier), I was having 3,500 calories a day and five litres of water. My diet remained the same for Look 2 (runner), but the portions became smaller and I was down to 1800 calories.

I would have an omelette of six egg whites and mushrooms with orange juice for breakfast. The food was bland; I couldn't have salt because the water retention would make me look puffy. Two hours later, I'd have a bowl of oatmeal with half a glass of skimmed milk. Half an hour later, I'd follow it up with nariyal paani.

Lunch was sauted broccoli, asparagus, beans, baby cabbage and pak choy (250 gms) along with grilled chicken (150 gms), all made in olive oil. I'd have a protein shake after two hours. Berries were the only fruits I could eat as they are low in glycemic index and provide the right antioxidants. Every evening, I'd have a bowl of boiled chana or moong salad with cucumber, tomatoes and a low-calorie dressing.

Dinner was the same as lunch, but basa or salmon replaced the chicken. Before going to bed, I'd have a protein shake.

And I craved: I love ice cream and gulab jamuns. My only cheat while training was a big glass of Dilli lassi every 15 days.

I suggest: You set a goal. It will push you towards what you want to achieve.

Now, smart pen that vibrates when you make spelling error

Washington: German inventors have developed a new hi-tech pen that gently vibrates every time it senses a spelling mistake or sloppy handwriting.

Lernstift is a regular pen with real ink, but inside is a special motion sensor and a small battery-powered Linux computer with a WiFi chip.

Together those parts allow the pen to recognise specific movements, letter shapes and know a wide assortment of words. If it senses bad letter formation or messy handwriting, it will vibrate, 'ABC News' reported.

Users can choose between two functions: Calligraphy Mode - pointing out flaws of form and legibility or Orthography Mode - recognising words and comparing the word to a language database. If the word isn't recognised it will vibrate, according to Daniel Kaesmacher, the 33-year-old co-founder of Lernstift from Munich.

The other co-founder Falk Wolsky, 36, had the idea for the pen last year while his 10-year-old son was doing his homework.

"His son had been struggling with his work and staying focused and Falk thought there should be a pen that gives him some sort of signal so he stays focused," Kaesmacher said.

After a year and a half in development, the founders have now brought Lernstift to Kickstarter to begin raising money and gauging interest.

Amarnath Shiv lingam melts completely

Amarnath Shiv lingam melts completelyKashmir: The naturally formed ice lingam of Lord Shiva at the Amarnath cave has completely melted, more than a month before the end of the pilgrimage.

Amarnath yatra started on June 28 this year and was scheduled to end on August 21. Around 2 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the cave shrine till date. It remains to be seen whether pilgrims will continue to flock to the holy shrine now that the lingam has melted away.

Even before the beginning of the annual pilgrimage, almost 40 percent of the lingam had melted away - the lingam was only 8-feet tall this year
.

The premature melting of the ‘Shiv lingam’ is rumoured to be the effect of either global warming or due to the heavy presence of pilgrims and security personnel inside the Amarnath cave.

Over 2 lakh people have visited the shrine till now.

Pilgrims start their journey to the 3880-metre-high cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas from both Baltal and Pahalgam base camps.

The distance from north Kashmir's Baltal base camp to the cave shrine is around 14 km and the pilgrims are able to return after 'Darshan' the same day.

However, the traditional south Kashmir route from Nunwan base camp to the cave is 45 km passing through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni halting stations. The one-way journey to the shrine on this route takes three days.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' mints Rs.8.5 crore on opening day
Farhan Akhtar in film's poster

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", deemed a moving and inspirational tale of life of Indian sprinter Milkha Singh, managed an impressive Rs.8.5 crore business on its opening day.

The movie, which released Friday, featuresFarhan Akhtar as the Flying Sikh, and he is said to have got as real as it gets for the role.

A paid preview of the movie Thursday minted
Rs. 1.5 crore, and the buzz for the movie only ended up getting a boost.

On its opening day, the movie made Rs. 8.5 crores across India, where it opened in 1,500 screens.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' had an amazing pick up in evening shows on Friday".

Confirming the same, Piyush Raizada, director, Delight Cinemas, told IANS: "It had a good occupancy on Friday, and it will do well this weekend."

Co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures, the movie was much-awaited ever since it was announced, and then its powerful and clean-cut trailer opened to viewers.

Farhan's performance, which is a result of several personal sessions with the man himself - Milkha Singh, has been immensely appreciated, while actresses Sonam Kapoor and Divya Duttaalso make their mark with small, but meaningful performances.

Members of the film fraternity have been heaping praises on the project, with some saying, it will "go down in history". Until then, "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" on Bollywood's box office!

Petrol prices hiked by Rs. 1.55 for 4th time in 6 weeks

State-run oil marketing companies have hiked petrol prices for the fourth time in six weeks, mainly on account of the sharp depreciation in the Indian rupee. Petrol prices will become costlier by Rs. 1.55 a litre (without taxes) from Monday.

The revision in prices, as per the practice of changing rates in line with cost every fortnight, was due on Tuesday, July 16, but has occurred a day earlier.

Petrol will cost Rs. 1.86 per litre more (including taxes) in Delhi from Monday and sell for Rs. 70.44 a litre against Rs. 68.58. Oil firms had on June 1 raised the price of the fuel by 75 paise (excluding taxes) and followed it with a Rs. 2 per litre increase on June 16, and Rs. 1.82 on June 29.

The latest hike has negated the four reductions earlier this year that had brought down the rates to Rs. 63 at the beginning of May.

The hike is due to "the combined impact of deteriorating exchange rate and increasing international oil prices," Indian Oil said in a statement.

Crude for domestic consumption is mostly imported and as the rupee weakens importing crude becomes costlier as all global commodities are priced in dollar. The Indian rupee has fallen nearly 11 per cent from May 1, from a level of 53.80 to end at 59.56 on Friday. It is the worst performing currency in Asia.

"Since last price change, the downward spiral of rupee against the dollar has continued to reach a low of Rs. 60.03 per dollar as againstRs. 58.94 per dollar during the previous fortnight. Further, international MS prices have also shown an uptrend and increased from $115.29/barrel to $117.19/barrel," it said.

The rupee had hit a record low of 61.21 last week, but since then has steadied after the Reserve Bank and market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) stepped in to stem the slide in the currency.

However, there will be no change in diesel prices just yet as the revision in its rates is due at the end of July. Petrol prices were deregulated in June 2010, but diesel prices continue to be controlled by the government.

Shocking: Minor rape victim's tongue chopped off

LUCKNOW: Three relatives of a rape accused tried to cut a 19-year-old girl's tongue to allegedly prevent her from testifying before a magistrate against their cousin at her village in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district on Wednesday night.

The teenager, allegedly gang-raped in January, was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon around 9.30pm as she had stepped out of her house to relieve herself.

Pratapgarh SP L R Kumar said the three attackers are cousins of Lavlesh, 20, who is in jail for allegedly raping the girl.

A three-member doctors' panel, which examined the girl, concluded that a blunt object had caused a "simple" 2.5 cm wound around her tongue in its report.

Kumar said a punch on her face may have led to such injury. "Victim's tongue might have got bitten by her teeth due to the impact of the punch.''

The girl's family, which had initially rejected her medical examination, maintained the three attacked her to prevent her from giving her statement against Lavlesh before a local court on July 24.

The attackers have been booked for attempt to murder.

Jethwara police station in-charge Raj Kumar said Lavlesh was booked for rape on the family's complaint. He said the girl was supposed to marry him before they had an acrimonious spilt. Later, the girl accused Lavlesh of raping her along with two more youth. Police have not been able to trace the remaining two.

Lavlesh's family has been mounting pressure on the girl's family to withdraw the charges. "On Wednesday, cousins of the accused identified as Lalji, Inder and an unidentified youth attacked the girl to teach her a lesson," added Kumar.

KANPUR: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped and later set on fire by six youths inEtawah district on Wednesday. She is now battling for her life at the UP Rural Institute of Medical Science in Saifai.

The accused hail from influential families and the police had initially tried to hush up the matter. But after the intervention of senior police officials, Ikdil police registered a case on Thursday and started investigations.

A police official said the woman was alone in her house in Desarmau locality at 1pm when the six youths, allegedly led by one Irfan, barged in and raped her. "Irfan and five others outraged the modesty of my sister," her brother told TOI. "When she resisted and threatened to report the matter to the police, they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire."

SSP Rajesh Modak said: "A case had been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and a hunt is on to nab the accused."

Rani Mukerji to lose 12 kg for 'Mardaani'

Rani Mukerji to lose 12 kg for 'Mardaani'
Rani Mukerji
Physical trainer Samir Jaura is busy working with actress Rani Mukerji for her look in "Mardaani". He says she needs to reduce 12 to 13 kg for her role in the movie.

"I'm training Rani for 'Mardaani' and she will be losing around 12 to 13 kg for the film. We started training two weeks back and she has already lost 3 kg," Jaura told IANS.

In the film, Rani plays a police officer, and the role demands her to be fit.

"Mardaani" is helmed by Pradeep Sarkar, who had earlier directed Rani in the film "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey Of A Woman".

Jaura is also the one who is training Priyanka Chopra for the Mary Kom biopic, and he is also behind the macho and fit looks of Farhan Akhtar in "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag".

Dhoni could be back for India in tri-series final

Dhoni could be back for India in tri-series final
Should Dhoni be passed fit, it is expected that Murali Vijay will make way for the Indian skipper. (AFP Photo)
PORT OF SPAIN: India and Sri Lanka meet yet again, this time in the final of the Tri-Nation Series at Queen's Park Oval on Thursday, amid increasing speculation that Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be back to the lead the World Cup and Champions Trophy holders.

Dhoni sustained a right hamstring strain while batting against the West Indies in his team's first match of the tournament on June 30 at Sabina Park in Kingston and an announcement was made the following day that he was ruled out of the rest of the competition with uncapped batsman Ambati Rayudu being flown in as his replacement.

However India's most successful captain ever has remained with the squad, and while there has as yet been no official word from the touring party, his presence on the field in pre-match warm-ups and in full team uniform during and after the final preliminary fixture against the Sri Lankans on Tuesday increase the likelihood that he will be back as at the helm for the final.

Stand-in captain Virat Kohli hinted as much at the toss ahead of the comprehensive victory over Angelo Mathews's side when he expressed hope that Dhoni had been recovering well enough to be able to play if they had gotten through to the final.

Should he be passed fit, it is expected that Murali Vijay will make way for the man increasingly regarded as the finest international captain in the contemporary game.

With or without Dhoni though, India are bracing for a much tougher Sri Lankan challenge than what transpired on Tuesday when fast-medium bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced theoutstanding figures of four for eight and engineered the demolition of the 1996 World Cup winners for just 96.
